I managed to convince Genevieve to get some rest. I didn’t honestly know if she needed it, but I had to assume she did. As for me? For about the thirtieth time, I stopped what I was doing, I plucked up my hands, and I stared at them.

The chief was in the room. She didn’t look like she was paying attention, but I swore she had eyes in the back of her head. She leaned over and slapped my hands down. “How about you stop staring at yourself, Atlantean boy, and you get back to work? This ship won’t fly itself.”

“Firstly, this ship absolutely flies itself – it has a very sophisticated autopilot. And secondly, I’m not a boy.”

“But you are an Atlantean,” she muttered. There was no suspicion or hatred there. She got back to work typing on a panel.

I watched her.

Again she didn’t look as if she was paying attention to me, but she paused, turned around, and locked her gaze on me. “What, you think I’m gonna kick you out? You think I’m gonna get scared? I’ll tell you what, don’t digest me, and we can still be friends.”

I snorted at her joke, but it wasn’t as easy as it should be. “What if I do digest you?” My voice fluctuated with real emotion.

“Then we won’t be friends. You can follow a logical argument, can’t you?”

“Yeah, I can. But I don’t—”

“If you’re about to tell me that you don’t know if you can control yourself, need I point out that you haven’t attacked me yet? You also haven’t hacked into this ship and started stealing energy from everywhere. In fact, you’ve been pretty benign. And sappy.”

My back arched at that term. “Sorry, sappy?” I snapped as I jolted to my feet.

She sniggered. “Why don’t you just replicate some flowers, write a card, and sing her some poetry while you’re there? I’ve never seen you like this, Scott. I’d say it’s refreshing, but your version of romance makes my teeth rot.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Are you denying that you’re together with the Atlantean?”

I opened my mouth. My lips kind of wobbled there. “No, I’m not denying it. But I’m not sappy,” I spat defiantly.

I turned around and got back to my task. The chief waited about a minute before she chuckled once more. “You’re also not losing control and digesting me. We just had an argument, my boy. It did not set off a chain reaction that destroyed the entire ship. Maybe you can control yourself after all.”

I stared over my shoulder at the chief as I finally realized what that had been about. I glanced at my hands. I flicked them in and out. I stretched the knuckles as far as they would go. I waited there in breathless silence for energy to start catapulting over my body and destroying everything in sight, but it didn’t.

… Maybe the chief was right, and I could control it after all. But scarcely did that thought settle when another rose.
