I managed to convince Genevieve to get some rest. I didnât honestly know if she needed it, but I had to assume she did. As for me? For about the thirtieth time, I stopped what I was doing, I plucked up my hands, and I stared at them.
The chief was in the room. She didnât look like she was paying attention, but I swore she had eyes in the back of her head. She leaned over and slapped my hands down. âHow about you stop staring at yourself, Atlantean boy, and you get back to work? This ship wonât fly itself.â
âFirstly, this ship absolutely flies itself â it has a very sophisticated autopilot. And secondly, Iâm not a boy.â
âBut you are an Atlantean,â she muttered. There was no suspicion or hatred there. She got back to work typing on a panel.
I watched her.
Again she didnât look as if she was paying attention to me, but she paused, turned around, and locked her gaze on me. âWhat, you think Iâm gonna kick you out? You think Iâm gonna get scared? Iâll tell you what, donât digest me, and we can still be friends.â
I snorted at her joke, but it wasnât as easy as it should be. âWhat if I do digest you?â My voice fluctuated with real emotion.
âThen we wonât be friends. You can follow a logical argument, canât you?â
âYeah, I can. But I donâtââ
âIf youâre about to tell me that you donât know if you can control yourself, need I point out that you havenât attacked me yet? You also havenât hacked into this ship and started stealing energy from everywhere. In fact, youâve been pretty benign. And sappy.â
My back arched at that term. âSorry, sappy?â I snapped as I jolted to my feet.
She sniggered. âWhy donât you just replicate some flowers, write a card, and sing her some poetry while youâre there? Iâve never seen you like this, Scott. Iâd say itâs refreshing, but your version of romance makes my teeth rot.â
âI donât know what youâre talking about.â
âAre you denying that youâre together with the Atlantean?â
I opened my mouth. My lips kind of wobbled there. âNo, Iâm not denying it. But Iâm not sappy,â I spat defiantly.
I turned around and got back to my task. The chief waited about a minute before she chuckled once more. âYouâre also not losing control and digesting me. We just had an argument, my boy. It did not set off a chain reaction that destroyed the entire ship. Maybe you can control yourself after all.â
I stared over my shoulder at the chief as I finally realized what that had been about. I glanced at my hands. I flicked them in and out. I stretched the knuckles as far as they would go. I waited there in breathless silence for energy to start catapulting over my body and destroying everything in sight, but it didnât.
⦠Maybe the chief was right, and I could control it after all. But scarcely did that thought settle when another rose.
